 My Life, Your Life

Spies like us

Graciela felt certain calmness as she examined her nude twenty seven year old physique in the full length mirror. She was living life way to fast to retain any sort of accommodating friendships let alone a love interest or husband as she was trapped in a vicious cycle of dependency reliant on narcissistic sociopath criminal elements that paid well but loathed anyone making even the slightest mistake in accounting for their monies. She gathered herself together and dressed according to plan a little unkempt to promote a sympathy response but leading with sex as always. She threw the comforter over the unmade bed gathered her laundry and fired it into the basket in the closet, flushed the dirty litter down the toilet and laid out fresh water and food for her kitten depositing the previous day’s saucers in the dishwasher hip chucking the door closed as it hung halfway open in the balance. She gathered her pride and joy to herself a kitten named Shadow and pulled her close to her face and cried into her fur coat. She kissed her on the nose three times in rapid succession and then placed her on the floor in front of her food dish.

Graciela wiped the tears from her eyes now make up free except a smidge of mascara and left her home her heels clicking down the street to her Escalade with the uniquely painted Plumbing Van still parked directly behind her SUV.

She arrived at exactly nine in the morning as the bank guard was opening the front door. She waited patiently while a flood of merchants entered and turned left to the marble counters on three sides with no less than fifteen customer and seven merchant tellers  stood ready to accept their deposit bags loaded with cash checks and coin. Soon the counting machines were humming in rapid succession. Graciela stood at the entrance of the foyer observing the hundred or so people waiting behind the various rope lines with others completing various slips on the island counter and still others signing the computer log to meet with an officer to access their safety deposit box or other request requiring an official signature or online access.

Graciela turned to the right and entered one of the three elevators now returning to the lobby after ferrying the well dressed mainly female bank employees to the upper floors. She started to cry but regained her composure and entered the carriage and pressed the floor to the executive suites. The door closed and she was whisked away to her future and a single decision to mark a huge turning point in her life whether right or wrong.

Robbie met Graciela at the door and invited her to sit down. Without saying a word she signaled that she wanted to write something down by taking a pen and practicing penmanship through the air. Robbie produced a brand new yellow pad and pushed it across the desk top. Graciela dew a Mickey Mouse hat with the words the walls have ears and pushed the tablet back across his desk.

Robbie read the words and pressed the call button on his phone. The door opened and two men entered the room. One was dressed impeccably well in a suit like Robbie and pulled up a chair next to him. The other was dressed very casually in blue jeans and a long sleeve cotton shirt. He was wearing a pair of hand woven loafers and no socks. He had two rings on his ring finger one with diamonds and gold and the other black onyx and silver. He sported a Black Movado Watch with a matching leather strap and around his neck hung a gold small black crucifix adorned in black onyx. He sat down next to her put his hand around her shoulder and said Graciela we have been watching you and you’ve been a very bad girl. But if you want to help us then we can help you. At first she thought that Robbie was all mobbed up with one of the New York Families vacationing in Miami until the well dressed man next to Robbie who looked like Detective Munch from television sporting his trademark prescription sun glasses leaned forward in his chair opened his coat to reveal a gold plated badge that read F.B.I. The Detective Munch looking federal agent said. So your name is Graciela and your family, did they emigrate from Italy to Argentina and then you moved to Mexico, Is that correct?

Graciela started to cry leaned forward and whispered their listening to us right now. The gentleman seated next to her retrieved a black berry from his pocket punched in a few numbers and pushed it in front of Graciela. She could hear voices of men who sounded like her and Robbie having a discussion. The man then said: “No, their not; they’re listening to this. It’s called a loop but with new continuous dialogue we have spliced word for word as recovered from your previous conversations with Robbie. They still believe that you’re a good girl seeking to promote their money laundering scheme through plying Robbie with cash and if necessary sexual extortion.”

Then the casually dressed man with no name said. “So why did you come here today?” Graciela replied: “Because I knew that Robbie was a good guy and if he didn’t give the money I paid him laundering our proceeds to you guys he dropped it on some South Florida charity because whatever he did with the money it didn’t affect him. I have dealt with so many people in this business and after the first drop they change. I can see the greed in their eyes. It’s like a drug. They want more and more and then they think they can outsmart the cartel and skim the proceeds for themselves. It’s the worst call I ever have to make to inform my employer that someone is at risk for skimming or outright theft because if I don’t inform then they will think I’m part of the problem and I don’t want my family to get hurt. So they hire some thug to bump into the problem at a gas station in the middle of the night and beat them down or worse lure them from the bar via a hot babe to an apartment and then torture them for days at a time and kill or maim them and then dump them into the Miami river.”

“So why did you want to meet with Robbie today” said the soft spoken relaxed man next to her. “Because somehow I am unable to access my thumb drive and it contains all the updates that I need to transmit within the next five hours or my brother and sister may get hurt.” “So where are your mother and father” Graciela: “They’re dead. They were killed by the cartel for protecting us.” “I see” said the relaxed looking man. “Listen darling we’re here to help you. We can access your drive and allow you to transmit your data and reports, but the next time, don’t use your birthday as your universal password.

Not that we wouldn’t have hacked it anyway. Are your brother and sister hostages?” “Yes sir”  “Do you ever get to talk with them” Graciela: “Yes once a week on Sunday mornings for five minutes.” “Great, then we will triangulate the call meaning we can locate the source and find where they being held and get them out and I am so sorry about the death of your parents.” Graciela held her face in her hands and cried uncontrollably saying:  “thank you, thank you, thank you all for trying to help me. I have been living a total nightmare for the last two years from a simple decision of transporting some marijuana across the border from Nuevo Laredo to Texas because we needed the money and now it’s been like wearing nice clothes while driving a Cadillac through hell.”

They instructed Graciela to continue her online dialog and release her updated money tracking reports published on excel just as she always had. Several weeks later she was summoned back to Robbie’s office. It was there that she was reunited with her brother and sister. The bank even sprang for a pizza party. Robbie was ushered into the conference room where he was informed that the intelligence they gleaned was provided to a rival cartel that did not engage in kidnapping or extortion and who subsequently eliminated their rivals and any future threat to Graciela and her family. The children were freed from the small house raided by Mexican Marines and a peacemaker dispatched from Washington D.C. The FBI had rounded up all the local cartel contacts and Graciela need not fear to remain in Miami or anywhere else she decided to live. Furthermore she was awarded a share of the confiscated monies for her cooperation in bringing a notorious cartel to a bitter end and Graciela was provided a direct phone number to call if she suspected any implied or real threats may be realized against her or her siblings.

That was the good news. The bad news was that the photographs originally sent to Robbie were traced back to his neighbor Linda across the street. The FBI didn’t believe that she knew much if anything about the extortion campaign but that she probably simply accepted a payment to follow Jane to the grocery store and visited the kids at school to create the package she was paid to provide.

Robbie opened his arms to the sea and preached to the sea gulls words to the effect  he missed the good old days of working with the government for now under the Obama administration loyalty is a one way street requiring the country to swear fidelity and their sacred treasure to the well being of Barack the Imperial President. He mused at how the Republicans needed to learn that in negotiating with the Obama administration there are no big deals. Barack like a child needed to be schooled in the value of money. If it was Friday and time for the rewarding of the weekly allowance but the chores weren’t complete then maybe half of the allowance would be provided. In other words in the current fiscal situation regarding debt limits and defaults the simple solution for Republicans Robbie reasoned was to assess how much revenue was available say $120B and how much needed say $300B and divide the shortage by one half or $90B and provide half of the needed revenue without any restrictions. Everyone loves free money so the Senate and the Administration would most certainly welcome the gift. It remained incumbent on the President to locate the savings for the balance of the shortage or the other $90B wherever he please although no budget whether Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, EPA, Medicare or Social Security, Welfare etc.. could be reduced by more than fifty percent of current levels. In fact they each and every one would be reduced by fifty percent over the next ten years until the debt was erased and the country returned to surplus. Each month the flush is repeated as opposed to the current paralysis ensuing from Federal Reserve bond buying scheduled into perpetuity with trillions of liabilities on the books and the inevitable sleight of hand maneuvers that result in dealing with incomprehensible amounts of government debt.
