Our Economic Hurricane

Have Fear will Travel:

In the tradition of dry friction or capital versus labor now loomed ever large as at the first sign of recession companies jettisoned millions of employees and stockpiled cash to the cheers of the stock market but two years later as profits slip they pondered: “where is the demand? I don’t know?”  Why don’t you ask your cash since you can’t ask your former employees? Sometimes your employees are your best customers as  Robbie remembered his own Mother who almost always spent her entire Macy’s paycheck in store to clothe her children in their formative years waiting for sales and then pouncing with her twenty percent employee discount which she often bragged about to her favorite son.

Robbie projected that the perfect marriage of capital and labor would not be consummated until the states and federal government repeal the minimum wage in a declining or deflationary economy or at least cut it by one half to $3.75 per hour, reduce the corporate income tax to eleven percent 11% and eliminate any penalties for the repatriation to America of funds on account in other countries. If the government enacted these three simple steps then the economy would sizzle like a shrimp, lobster steak kabob and China would implode. But in the meantime while this administration diddles away each day with speeches and promoting failed theories the suffering of the people continues unabated.

In the Alternative we will continue with double digit unemployment and the accompanying corrosive effect of social unrest for decades. Labor always subject to shortages and surpluses affecting the hourly wage and now with a surplus of labor; wage deflation was a necessary economic outcome to stabilize the unemployment rate and like the $17T debt, the failure of government spending to arrest the downturn, and the normal deflation of wages in this environment while the talking wizards of Ed Schultz, Chris Matthews and to a lesser extent Lawrence O’Donnell never seemed to embrace the most difficult solutions of inflicting even more pain in the short term to arrest the harsh economic realities and pressures affecting their viewing audience and constituency preferring to act with only half an equation to promote their social agendas their reputations now welded to that of this administration as the ideology of the country continues to shift right or more conservative.  They like the hieroglyphs will become cliffhangers and relics of the past.

Their Democratic Party imploding by the seemingly everlasting winds of hurricane change their sun shelter and party beach hut long gone as they pressed their noses and fingernails into the concrete slab and foundation remaining; their screams unheard the sound devoured by the howling forces arrayed against them; the severity of the storm exacerbated by an administration capable not of making the hard choices of fiscal reform but of hitchhiking on expensive jets to carry the daily dose of second banana cheerleading from the sidelines promoting a re-election formula of have speech will travel and post election strategy of look over there while pecking away like a treed woodpecker at the  U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights with Here Ye Here! Here Ye!, the following Executive Orders shall be treated as the law of the land since I cannot build a consensus and no one is willing to accept my invitation to visit the White House. I need mo money! Every few months it’s the same thing. I just can’t grow the government without mo money! Remember you didn’t hire me to be conservative in hard times, you hired me among other reasons to pretend to redistribute income and assuage your repressed ancestry guilt. That’s exotic, and so am I!

 My Neighbor, Your Neighbor

 The Extortionist

Robbie remembered when the Federal Government was his partner and protector. One day he opened a package at work that showed photos of his children at school and wife at the grocery store. Later the next day he received a phone call from someone who said he wanted to move large amounts of cash through his bank. He asked for a week to prepare for the transaction and the following Saturday night after mass he handed the envelope to a fellow parishioner and FBI Supervisory Special Agent who scanned the photos and told him to proceed with the transaction.

The following Tuesday he received another phone call and opened a special account to accept the monies proffered from a number of Mexican banks all in one afternoon and totaling at least ten million dollars. As requested by the anonymous caller he dispersed the monies to twenty some LLC accounts opened in his system from years prior but only retaining balances of one hundred dollars or so. The following day a stunningly beautiful woman was escorted to his office from a previous scheduled appointment. She proceeded to leave a briefcase on his desk and lean over him exposing the lingerie underneath her suit and asked:  “is there anything else I can do for you?” Robbie pushed his chair back stood up and walked her arm in arm to the door and replied.  “No; but thank you for asking. I am a happily married man.” The woman in her late twenties replied? “You’re a lucky man! Let’s keep it that way” she then departed but turned at the elevator and said:  “I hope you don’t mind I sent a bouquet of long stem roses to your wife from you.”

As instructed Robbie left for home with the briefcase stuffed with cash. In accordance with their wishes he proceeded to accept a total of three additional wire transfers with the last one totaling one hundred million dollars and after each transfer the same vixen courier appeared with a briefcase for Robbie and left with an empty duplicate.

Early one evening a plumber arrived at their home to replace their water heater. The accumulated cash was stuffed into the old water heater and removed as evidence against the cartel. A few days later the courier was stopped for running a red light and written a citation. She became belligerent with the deputies and was arrested when a routine check revealed she had fifteen unpaid parking tickets and a bench warrant for a moving violation. She was booked into the County Lockdown at precisely seven o’clock. Her residence was entered under the sneak and peak provision of the Patriot Act. Her keys and a thumb drive were removed and copied and returned with her personal effects after the pass code of her birthday was entered opening the drive but was changed thereby blocking her from accessing her courier account information putting her in a tough spot with her employer and severely limiting her future employment options.

Unbeknownst to her a tiny metallic chip of an identical paint match was affixed to the roof of her Black Escalade. She was released on her own recognizance at exactly midnight when a well dressed woman entered the facility and “badged” the night supervisor. The woman was processed for what seemed like an hour where she recovered her personal effects and when handed the key ring and thumb drive pressed it closely to her chest. She then waited for another hour for her car to arrive from the impound lot and sped home under the watchful eye of the satellite feed beaming into a free painted psychedelic themed plumbing van confiscated in San Francisco in 1967 and two blown engines later now parked across the street from her apartment in an upscale complex adjacent to a quiet residential neighborhood.

She parked in front of the van and looked both ways prior to crossing the street, unlocked her door, dropped her purse while clinging to the keys and loaded the thumb drive while booting her computer. She tried several times to open the drive but each time was denied. She realized that she was really tired and rather than risk a twenty four hour lock out from the system she closed the window and turned the system off walked to the kitchen and retrieved an open bottle of wine from the refrigerator. She pulled the cork out with her teeth and consumed almost one fourth of the bottle with one pull. She wiped the overflow and her lipstick off in one clean disinfecting motion with a stale kitchen towel. She removed her heels and stockings and briefly massaged her legs and feet and fell backwards on her half made bed and into an immediate deep slumber. She was angelic in appearance and the seer from the closet kept a watch on her until the break of day when the spirit slipped out the front door unnoticed by all except the kitten clawing the pane of the front window sill.

Graciela who preferred to be called Stacey awoke from her sleep thinking that she had heard the front door open and close. She sat up and looked at the clock and then went straight to the computer and attempted to open her thumb drive again but to no avail. She began to panic and hyperventilate and retreated to the kitchen to grab a lunch bag and blow into it until she calmed down. She poured a drink from the bottle of open wine left on the counter from last night and reached for her blackberry. She called Robbie who answered her on his private line.

They arranged to meet in an hour and she striped off the clothes from yesterday and her brief stint County lock up and showered shampooed and shaved. The steam helped her to breathe more easily and she knew one day that this day would come. She feared for her life but more so or her only remaining family a younger brother and sister left behind in Mexico.
